Garmin Western Europe App Reviews

Western Europe

Im driving in Italy and thought that the Garmin W.E. could be of some help, instead it is totally useless. Plain and simple it doesnt work. For the price I paid any GPS unit could do the job without problems. Theres any way I can get my money back?

Brilliant

I am currently using the iPhone 4 Verizon while traveling in Europe. No cellular data nor wireless data, pure GPS usage. The app worked 100% flawlessly in Holland and Germany. Fabulous app. It was worth every $. Thank you GARMIN.

Disappointed

I guess I can blame myself for not noticing that it doesnt have a pedestrian mode. I bought this for an upcoming trip to Rome and Venice Italy. I planned to use it mostly in pedestrian mode to get around. I own the Garmin StreetPilot (The Green Logo Internet Based Maps) which has pedestrian and assumed this one also had it. Big disappointment, but Im sure it will work fine for driving. Please add Pedestrian mode with public transportation in major European cities!

Almost perfect but.......

Needs Ped Mode!!!

Good app but utterly disappointing

I bought this app before traveling and prepared it and made sure it was working and saved all my destinations in Europe in advance, it was working just fine and finding every address in my itinerary was easy, and i was confident that i wont need any internet access to use it on the road when i arrive, thats why I bought it in the first place. But when I actually arrived, the first time i needed to use it for its own purpose of existence on my phone, the app required Internet access to activate the maps!!!!, boom, perfect!!!. Later i tried to reactivate it at the hotel but still didnt work. the same day there was a software update I thought maybe if I update it I wont have any problem, and since then the app has been on waiting status, failing to update for almost a week, im now wandering around with nothing but google maps. Im writing this review to express my ongoing disappointment with this app. I have no option but to get a regular GPS device and hope for a refund for this useless 1.8 gega software. Apparently this app works perfectly where you dont need it, at home. In a nutshell, dont buy!

Garmin Western EU

A fantastic app that took us everywhere we wanted to go in Italy and France.

Does not work - period.

First off, its ridiculous the amount of room this app wants to even do an update - better have 4 GB available...I had 3.2 GB free, and it wasnt enough. Secondly, we have put in six (6) addresses throughout France, and not one of them did this app recognize. NOT ONE! We ended up using Apple maps (iOS 6)...yes this app is a bigger piece of crap than Apple maps. And if that isnt enough reason to go elsewhere - like Tom Tom or stock Apple - when they say its iPad compatible...that just means you get a 2x button - its really just an iPhone app theyre repackaging with a 2x button. What a serious waste of money this app was...

POI

I cant add custom POI Waste lot of money

No map update??

Dissapointed there is no map update!!

Horrible updates and fixes

First, I want to point out a fix for the map activation bug: delete the free 3-D Buildings extra and you will be able to use the app in Airplane mode. The 2.4 and 2.4.1 updates where not given anywhere near adequate quality testing. The result is that upgrade 2.4 caused crashing in two ways; first in that the purchased and free "Extra" downloadable content: PhotoReal and such, where incompatible from version 2.3 to version 2.4. This would cause the app to crash. Then the app crashed because the data stored in iCloud could be easily corrupted or was incompatible between versions. Version 2.4.1 was a rushed shotgun fix for the incompatible DLC issue in that it indiscriminately deleted the extras. It did not address the iCloud issue. Another bug was exposed in 2.4+: Contacts could not be looked up. Theres supposed to be a fix pending for this one. Then yet another bug was exposed that dramatically effected people from the USA who needed the western Europe maps to work in offline mode. If you downloaded the free extra, "3-D Buildings and Landmarks" the app would not finish booting without requiring some Internet connectivity to, "Activate maps." Ive already covered the fix for that one above. Garmin really should not be using their customers as beta testers.

Disaster app

Purchased this app for nearly $100 and it wont even open, left me stranded in Europe and the app constantly crashes! Dont waste your money on this trash!

Good, but in Milan its a disaster.

I like the product but every time I move in Milan (Italy) the app seems determined that I should enter the limited traffic zone. Every time! Its a problem because the Area C is not very well marked on the streets. When you realise youre in its too late and, wham!, a fine. Oh, and the redirect to Report a Problem above just drops me into your FAQ page. Which tells me Garmin is not serious about learning about problems.

Garmin for Western Europe on iPhone

When you download the app it doesnt let you get all the maps, you have to choose, and then doesnt seem to allow you to remove or swap out maps for different ones.

Driving in Norway… bad

I bought this app to drive in Norway and it’s was a pain. The app takes me out of the route and make me do turns with no reason all the time. Very silly thing, in a straight route, the app make me do a right turn, a left turn and a right turn to keep driving ahead. Also, it’s a $90 app non compatible with ipad retina display. Completely disappointed since I own a garmin gps (USA) with a lot more features than this simple app. Suggestion, buy TomTom app to drive in Europe. Waiting a refund!

Can not load Benelux maps

Please fix that as I do not need all of them

really bad app

It just does not work and keep displaying can not calculate route message. Same problem with the Garmin USA.

Great app.

Have had Garmin USA for years works great. Will work even in rural areas where you have no phone signal. Also will continue working when you are on a phone call other navigation will stop .... Very pleased am going to try Garmin Europe now.

Works fine but updating maps is a big pain

Years after this app launched, one big issue remains - each map update requires a complete re-download of all map data rather than applying incremental changes. This means you have to babysit the download process for several gigabytes worth of data every time the maps are updated (once every few months). The Garmin map data server is bandwidth constrained - even on a very fast connection your map download will pause or go slowly at times. Expect to spend up to several hours letting your device do its download thing and checking it once in a while to make sure it’s still downloading. Sometimes, as just happened to me, the map download will restart from the beginning. I had over 2GB downloaded of the 2.5GB map and it started over from the beginning. Also a warning - if you have automatic app updates enabled and Garmin releases a new version, the new version will require a new map download immediately - otherwise you’ll have no maps available. Very unfortunately, new Garmin app versions do not give you a choice about continuing to use your existing installed maps so if you’re on the road or away from a fast connection, you’re now without Garmin maps. A big problem. The Garmin map downloads continue to be a big pain in using this app. A minor thing - wish the app was called Garmin WE for ex, or Garmin, and the app icon reflect the map region. Instead the app is called “WesternEU” - which I don’t personally like.
